Basic facts to know about the heart.
The heart is composed of four chambers: two atria and two ventricles. It is a powerful organ, pumping approximately 2,000 gallons of blood daily and beating around 100,000 times each day to sustain vital circulation throughout the body.

Heart Function
Understanding the heart's function can seem complex at first, it becomes much clearer. Blood flows from the right atrium through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle. From there, the heart pumps it through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary artery, which carries it to the lungs for oxygenation. Oxygen-rich blood then returns to the heart via the pulmonary veins, entering the left atrium. It flows through the mitral valve into the left ventricle, from which it is pumped through the arteries to circulate throughout the body.
